Shenyang - the Old Capital in the North

Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning province, which borders North Korea. Like Changchun and Harbin, Shenyang is a heavy industrial and modernized city. During the process of modernization, however, Shengyang did manage to maintain some of its old characters.

The Palace Museum is Shenyang's most famous tourist attraction. It is one of only two intact imperial palaces, although much smaller and less extravagant than the one in Beijing.

History

Known as Mukden, Shenyang has traditionally been the political and economic center of Manchuria. Inhabited by apemen 280,000 years ago, Shenyang has a history of 2,700 years.

Shenyang was the capital of Manchu from 1625 until 1644 before the Manchus conquered the entire China and moved to Beijing as the Qing Dynasty.

In 1905, a decisive battle of the Russo-Japanese war was fought and won here by the Japanese. During the 1920's and 1930's, Zhang Tsolin, one of China's most powerful warlords, resided in Shenyang. He was later killed by Japanese in 1931. This incidence marked Japanese aggression in China.

Palace Museum * * * * *
The Imperial Palace occupies an area of 60,000 square meters. The style of the palace is Han with Mongolian and Manchu-style touches.

Pay special attention to Dazheng Dian (Hall of Great Affairs) and Shiwang Ting (Pavilions of Ten Princes). The latter reflects the Manchu style of government. Nurhachi, the first king that united the Manchus, had split the people into 'banners' or tribes. Each of the ten pavilions was designed for the leader of one of these tribes. Dazheng Dian is where the tribal leaders met with the king to discuss affairs of the country.

North Tomb * * *
Chongqing Museum is best known for its collection of ancient tomb bricks. Some of them have a history of 2000 years with elegant carvings. The museum is a clunky warehouse with poor lighting and no English titles.

East Tomb * * *
The East Tomb was similar to the North Tomb although a bit smaller. It was built for Nurhachi and his wife. There are a number of temples and other buildings within the courtyard.

Shenyang Locomotive Museum * * *
This museum, far better regarded than the one in Datong, is considered as the best of its kind in China. Its collection includes an American locomotive built in 1907, a Chinese CK 1038 built in 1960 and various engines built in Japan, the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Poland.

Art
Liaoning Provincial Museum * * *
The ground floor of this museum is taken up by two huge dinosaur skeletons discovered recently. The museum also contains an excellent exhibition of photos of the city taken 1901 to 1912 by a French photographer.
